A Great Opportunity

Mar 17th, 2009 by Rev Susan Deetz |

For a city the size of Duluth, we have an amazing number of groups eager to teach us about issues of racism and diversity. For starters there’s the Peoples Institute North, the  Clayton, Jackson, McGhie Committee, and Peace Church dismantling racism team. These groups are very active and offer many educational opportunities (I’ll try to do a better job of getting this information out to people via the Peace & Justice page on this site). Right in our own backyard we have UMD-and they are presenting a great workshop on March 30th. The UMD Diversity Commission is sponsoring this jam packed all day workshop titled, UMD Summit On Equity, Diversity, and Multiculturalism. The sessions range from restorative justice to anti-racism dialogue circles to understanding deaf culture.St. Andrews is participating in the poster session highlighting who we are, why, and how we address these issues. All this for FREE, but you do need to register on line. The keynote speaker is Dr. Beverly Daniel Tatum, president of Spelman college, and author of such titles as “Why Are All The Black Kids Sitting Together I the Cafeteria?” and “Can We Talk About Race?” I hope many from St. Andrews are able to join the discussion by taking part in this day. See you there.
